Used Lateral File Cabinets
There are two different types of filing cabinets on the market today — vertical and lateral. The drawers in a lateral filing cabinet are not as deep as in a vertical one so you can’t fit as many files from front to back.
To compensate for this, lateral models are wider from the front so that you’ll be able to put in more rows of files side by side.
These models are useful in smaller, narrower spaces. While the footprint against the wall is bigger, they don’t extend out as far from the wall. This aspect makes it easy to get to the files and saves space in the center of the room.
Typically, they’ll have between two and four drawers, although that depends on the model. The drawers are usually the same size and depth, although this can vary in some models.
The added advantage here is that the extra width and shorter draft make the model more stable when a drawer is open. You can thus have bigger drawers without worrying about the whole unit toppling when they’re open.
The units can be made from a wide range of materials. For offices, metal is often a popular choice as it is low-maintenance and durable. It also offers excellent security. You do also get wooden models, and laminated models if the look of metal doesn’t appeal to you.
